Observation 2- Bethani

1. I found an ad representing Altoids' mints which was obviously used during the Valentine's season. This ad had two porcupine's hugged up to each other sharing a can of Altoids' that is heart-shaped. They are both smiling at each other and had smitten looks on their faces. The writing above the ad says "Love Hurts!" which refers to the sharp quills on the pocupine's bodies which obviously would injure an object if touched. The Altoids' can is shaped like a heart which helps you understand that this is a Valentine's day ad. This can represents mints, so it helps viewers think that they will need to have these mints if they want to encounter love the upcoming holiday. There is also a large heart in the background of this ad to enforce the holiday and importance of the ad.

2. This ad suggests that having a supply of Altoids' mints will be very important to one's life of Valentine's day.

3. Why are these mints so important? Can you have an enjoyable Valentine's Day without them? Why?

4. I think the purpose of this ad was to hint to the viewers that they need to have fresh breath on Valentine's day if they want to be "loved on". I think they showed the porcupine's hugged up to show that you should share them with your signicant other.

5. Why did you chose this ad over the other ones? Is this important to your life? Why or why not?

6. This ad suggests that having a supply of Altoids' mints is important on Valentine's day for a comfortable night. Altoids' mints help you be more confident to be comfortable in your own skin to get close to the one you love.

  1. 1.Bethani's thesis statement offers significance about the topic and is intriguing.

    2. The thesis gives a small window of the ad without being too obvious.

    3. Someone could argue against the thesis by saying that Altoids will not make your Valentine's Day better.

    4. It is not too long that it gives the advertisement away but it is just long enough to give you a general idea of what the ad is trying to convey to their audience.

  2. Although I believe that this is a good thesis, the advertisement's significance is not a very globally important topic. I believe that a better, more expandable ad could be found that would make a thesis as well as the visual rhetoric assignment easier to write.
