Observation 2 - Steve

Hey Bloggers!

1. I watched a commercial for an animal shelter company because I'm very sentimental about those kinds of things. Also, they tend to use a lot of visual rhetoric to try to convince the viewer to go out and rescue an animal in need. In the commercial they show a dog who is loved playing with his family. The dog is very healthy looking and obviously happy running around with its human companions. Subsequently, they show a dog in a shelter laying on its paws looking miserable. The voice over proceeds to tell the viewer that all animals can be healthy and happy with the right amount of tender loving care. The commercial then shows videos of other sad looking puppies/grown dogs and kittens/grown cats.

2. The purpose of the animal shelter commercial is to use rhetoric to instill a sense of apathy in the viewer.

3. How do you figure old boy? Can you prove it? What is the creator of the commercial really trying to make the view do?

4. The purpose of the animal shelter commercial, which shows pathetic pictures of unfortunate animals, is to instill a sense of apathy for these animals in the viewer and perhaps cause the viewer to donate money to the shelter, raise awareness for these animals, or actually physically go to the shelter and adopt an animal.

5. Can you clean this up so it sounds like college quality work, Steven? What interests me with this thesis I just created?

6. The ultimate purpose of the commercial for the Center of Abandoned Animals, which shows pictures of unfortunate animals is to instill a sense of apathy, using rhetoric, for abandoned/abused animals, so that people may donate to the charity or perhaps actually adopt a new pet from the shelter, which plays with people's emotions and is a universally liberal proposition.

  1. Hey Steven,
Glad to see you have gotten some work done. You're such a slacker! LOL!!!!

Anywho, I think your thesis needs a lot of work. Not only are you not specific enough in the aspects of rhetoric in the commercial that you will examine, but your entire thesis is a run on sentence. The subject is a significant enough one to work on but your thesis is vague and lacks importance. Better luck next time buddy.

  2. Ps. By run on I meant it only has one clause.

  3. You should use an explanation of Ethos when it talks about the lost dog, and Pathos when it talks about how everyone is sad.
