Observation 2

1. The "Sunny Side of Truth" commercial begins with a fact about a tobacco executive in 1971 who suggests that some women would rather prefer small babies. Then an animated stork flies into the commercial carrying a healthy baby. The stork then claims that healthy babies wears him out. The man then proceeds with a song claiming that all women would prefer smaller babies than healthier ones. It claims that "healthy babies are just no fun, esp. when they eat a ton," and that growing healthy kids is wacko. During the song, healthy babies suddenly parades out of their incubators to dance along with the song. The babies looks healthy, happy, and you can even hear their laughter. Also there are audiences who look puzzled throughout the whole song, and there are others who dances along. At the end of the commercial, the singer questioned his song and the tag line "The Sunny Side of Truth" becomes visible indicating that the truth is alleviated in order to make it appealing.
2. The cartoon suggest that smoking is detrimental to everyone's health
3. Why is it bad for your health? How does it show this?
4. The commercial suggest that smoking is detrimental to everyone's health by revealing to the audience an alleviated information, which is the favor of smaller babies in this case, to claim that smoking does cause health problems to everyone.
5. What do you find interesting about this observation? How does it affect larger social issues? How does the better appeal affect the audience?
6. The "Sunny Side of Truth" commercial implies that smoking is detrimental, not just to the smokers health, but also to citizens who are involuntarily exposed to the second hand smoke, by informing the audience false information in order to create a better appeal from the negative one.

  1. Your thesis offers a clear statement of significance, giving details from the commercial to prove the authors point. The thesis is clear and sharp identifying the audience and their view on the issue. However, toward the very end of your thesis, the sentence gets a tad bit confusing. It's hard to tell what exactly the "negative one" is referring too. You used a lot of details from the commercial to form your thesis, so there isn't anything that someone could argue against. Your thesis is not too dense or too simplistic. It has enough detail to make it not simplistic, but it doesn't sound like a 4 page paper condensed into 1 sentence. Overall, the thesis is really good and it could possibly use a little more rhetoric ideas.
