Observation 10

this film uses visual rhetoric in order to appeal to the audience's senses. For example John is always shown in darkness becuase he is a murderer. He has an amazing sense which he hides from the world and also is a murderer, which he hides from the world. Being cast in darkness is a way to display the fact that he has all of these secrets. the movie also goes through a lot in order to make people understand what things smell like. We first recieve the clue that something smells good when John becomes obsessive with it, but these feelings are then strenghthened through visual rhetoric. bright pictures of attractive women as well as the tempting music allows the audience to interpret a smell though a form of visual rhetoric.

Storyboard

Storyboards are graphic organizers such as a series of illustrations or images displayed in sequence for the purpose of previsualizing a motion picture, animation, motion graphic or interactive media sequence, including website interactivity.

Obersvation 10

Dear class,

This film is trying to show the importance of being seen and how having a special gift can be a curse. In his case he has an incredible sense of smell, however, it leads to him not having many social skills or being able to communicate normally. It also shows the differences between social classes by using colors. When the scene has richer people in it, it is full of color. However, when the scene is in the slums or a poorer part of the city, it is gray and colorless.

The visual rhetoric strategies appeal to the audiences' emotions and sense of sight. They "personify" smell by using flashes of visual rhetoric. For example, when Jean Baptist smelled a new or extraordinary scent the movie had flashes of things that appealed to the audience's sense of sight.

This movie was really creepy. It was full of death and naked chicks and everything. However, it does show a good fact about life - that being taken for granted and not having a sense of self is very bad for you. That's why nerds go crazy sometimes, like for example the horrific Virginia Tech shootings/murders.

Go Sox

Love,
Steven

P.S. I'm going to miss all of you when our class is over in a couple weeks :(

Observation 10

The main argument in the movie highlights the drastic difference between the upper and lower class. The upper class is more colorful, the people are happier, more laid back, and less stressed. The lower class is constantly working and scrounging for food. They are grumpy, stressed, and colorless.
The uses of light, color, and makeup were prominent in this movie to emphasize the argument. The use of pathos as a rhetorical strategy was very strong. The movie as a whole was very graphic and used shock to impact the viewer.
I think the concept of this movie is very strange. It is calculating and creative, but altogether strange.

Observation 10

1. The main thing that this film trys to argue is the great differences between the upper and middle class people, concerning everything from their living conditions to how their everyday life is and their manners. I think the emphasis is put on perfume, showing through visual rhetoric how the one thing you cant see (smell) into things that represent smell that we can see.
2and3. As we discussed in class, this film shows everything that concerns the lower class in dark colors, and makes everyone seem like they have been rolling in dirt. But, when a scene with the upper class, the colors are vibrant, almost blinding and uncomfortable to look at. The colors are almost gold, maybe to represent the money and unreachable status. Even the music used throughout the film in haunting when Jean is making his perfume. The way Jean lays the girls out across the town almost as if they are modeling, trying to look peaceful. He laid them in places that they would surely be found.
4. This is a very good movie to represent visual rhetoric. Someone mentioned before me about how everyoen that Jean gets close to dies off. I think that is an important aspect to remember with him. He never had the opportunity to get close to someone and have a functional relationship.

Observation 10

1. The film intends to argue the dramatic differences between the social classes during this period of time. As we seen in the film John Baptista is in slavery during most of the time.
2 & 3. In this movie the rhetorical strategies and appealed used is illustration and pathos. Illustration is used in this movie through the use of color, lighting, music, and apparel. These factors help in supporting the argument by making the major differences between the social classes apparent. The different styles of clothing from the scrubs clothing of John to the expensive clothing of the rich families. When the movie is focused on light John the lighting is dark, but on other topics the lighting may be bright. The music changes tempo and tone all the time during the movie to enhance the plot.
4. This movie showing was a good idea for an in class activity.

Ben Kilian

Observation 10

1)Perfume was written to with the intentions of comparing and contrasting the lives of the lower and upper classes of France. It shows the living conditions of the lower class as slum like and dirty and almost unlivable. While the upper class lives in a nice world with nice clothing, clean skin and beautiful and colorful street markets with decadent foods.
2&3) The film uses his sense of smell to relate with different scenes. It also uses colors to distinguish between the different classes. When showing the lower classes the screen was always dark as opposed to when the upper classes were being showing the screen was vibrant and full of color. Also you can see when Jean Baptiste was just learning and exploring his since of smell he just looked like a dark individual but when he was taken under the wing of Master as Master taught him things Jean's skin began to brighten. It happened as if the more he became enlightened the more his skin began to brighten.
4) The movie is very informative about how perfume use to be made and shows the importance and it's value during that time period.

Observation 10

1. The film Perfume main argument is to show the contrast between the upper and lower classes in society and their differences in living conditions.  The film shows the filthy living conditions the lower class lives in by the use of colors and filth seen all around.  The upper class, however, lives in much better conditions and can be seen by how nice they dress, where they live, their daily lifestyle, etc.
2&3.  The film portrays the different smells through the use of a variation of colors and images.  In the beginning of the movie, the images of filth, dead animals, grimy conditions helps to envision the stench and filthy conditions the lower class are a part of.  When Jean Baptiste goes into the city, the colors change and everything becomes brighter.  For example, the perfume shop lights up and is very bright compared to the slums around it.
4. Every time Jean becomes obsessed with a women and her scent, the girl always ends up dead.  It doesnt phase him about what he is doing, and the uproar it is causing because of his obsession with scent.

Observation 10

1)The film Perfume intends to argue that the contrast between the lower and upper classes in France at this time was huge. The film uses color and visual rhetoric to achieve the vision of contrast between the two.
2 And 3) The rhetorical appeals and strategies used in the film include the use of color, music, lights, shadows, makeup, costumes, and environment to support its arguments. Dark dull colors are used to describe the life of the poor, which contrasts the vivid clear bright colors which are used when associated with the rich upper class. Color is also used to describe scent in the movie. When the old perfumer smells Jean-Baptist’s new perfume he is overtaken to an environment of bright color, flowers, and tranquility.
4) This movie is AWESOME!

4/09/2009

Observation 10

1. The main argument of Perfume is to display the differences in lifestyles between the lower class in the slums of Paris and the upper class in the city. The film attempts to portray the lower class as dangerous and dirty using many visual strategies.
2 & 3. Color is a very important rhetorical strategy used to force their argument. When showing scenes of the lower classes, they use dark, and ominous colors. When Jean Baptiste travels to the city, there are brighter colors present. People are wearing red, green, blue and the streets are not nearly as drab as what he was used to. When he finds the perfume store, it is painted bright blue and everyone inside is clean and clothed in bright colors. The perfume bottles are also brighter colors to emphasize how expensive and rich the setting is. When Jean Baptiste travels to the new town, everything is even brighter than in Paris because it is where he desires to be most. Also, the girls that Jean Baptiste thinks smell so nice, have pale skin and bright red hair emphasizing their importance and visually emphasizing their smell.

4/08/2009

Observation 10

1. The main argument of the movie is the show the deep contrast between the upper class and the lower class living conditions. Another argument of the film is to show how a person can be consumed by a passion(in this case, the scent of smell), causing them to be wreckless and do things without thinking.
2&3. The film uses color and shadows to help with the visual appeal. In the film, black and greys are used in the scenes that are depicted as disgusting and that have bad smells. When he experiences an enticing smell, the colors brighten up and make everything appear lighter and more jubilant. When Jean Baptiste sees a woman and becomes overtaken my her scent of smell, his face becomes shadowed to represent the evil desire his passion of smell has caused him, while the woman is in the bright light representing her scent.
4. Everytime Jean leaves his master, they die. Everyone from his mother to the perfume master pass away as soon as he leaves.

Observation 10

1. The film perfume intends to compare and contrast the different classes of the society at the time the movie is set. Jean-Baptiste's conditions as a peasant is overwhelmingly painful to watch. As a man of lower class, he undergoes and experiences tough conditions, and this is certainly portrayed in the movie. Another argument the movie conveys is that greed leads to rash and imprudent actions in order to attain excessive needs. After Jean smelled the powerful scent of a girl, he was utterly unconcerned about murdering girls in order to preserve their smell. Family, companion, or even just a guide is important for everyone. Jean lived a corrupted life in this whole movie and I think it was mainly due to the fact that he had no one who loved, taught, and cared for him.
2 & 3. The film easily portrays the different smell through the variation of color intensities. For instance, if Jean smells a pleasant smell, the object tends to have brighter colors, such as fruits, dresses, flowers, etc. Foul smells, such as fishes or the smell of a tired, laboring peasant, is portrayed with low intensities of color, usually brown, white, and mostly black. Imagery is also an important strategy in the movie especially when they try to portray harsh conditions compared to a town, such as Grassland, where everything looks beautiful and blooming. Music is also devised to convey viewers about the tough times the peasants undergo. When Jean smells an overwhelming pleasant smile, music becomes livelier instead of dreary.
4. One thing that I've noticed with Jean-Baptiste is that because he has no one, he lacks normal judgment. Also, with every person that Jean lives or provide for, they always end up dying through misfortunes. And usually before they die they usually encounter a time where they are overjoyed, either by relief or money. For instance, the lady in the orphanage, his master while preserving animal skin, and the perfume master all received some sort of money from him but then dies after Jean leaves. These events foreshadow the tragedies that Jean will commit with his strength of smell. Also, the events metaphorically compares perfume, after applying to oneself the smell makes a person happy but the smell does always disappear one way or another.

Observation 10

1. In the film Perfume the arguments it tries to portray is the strong contrasts between the life of our lower class main character and the other world he enters. The world seems to not be in favor of Jean Baptise. The film also portrays that when given a talent that you should know how to control it because consequences can come from it.
2& 3. His former life lacked of color and the new world is filled with it The new world is also filled with objects that he smells that are also colored. The harsh imagery used during his birth with the fish market and hanging shows the audience the roughness of his coming into a poor world. This appeals to the pathos of the audience to feel sympathy for Jean.
4. Jean seems to be meant for tragedy. He takes part in his mother's death and the girl's without any intentions to do so.

Observation #10

The film is trying to argue that the peasants live in very unsatisfactory conditions. They portray this with the use of colors and images. They make the awful stench of the streets apparent through the use of images. Dead fish, human feces, vomit, blood, and grime on the overcrowded streets are shown to portray the living conditions and the smell. The clothing worn by the peasants portrays these conditions as well. They are filthy and tattered and droll in color. These images appeal to the audience’s pathos in order to invoke sympathy within the audience.

The film even portrays the main character’s incredible sense of smell through images. Empowering scents are represented by bright colors in comparison to the dark colors of the streets. When Jean-Baptiste goes into town for the first time and goes by a perfume shop, the shop is glowing with color. Also when Jean-Baptiste nears a woman with an overpowering smell, she is almost glowing and is wearing light colors. This is a use of comparison-contrast; the contrast between the glowing young woman and everything else insinuates that she is of more importance to Jean-Baptiste.

Another argument that the film makes is that scents can be overwhelming to Jean-Baptiste. When Jean-Baptiste goes somewhere new, like the market, he is overpowered by scents; he cannot get enough of them. He has to smell everything. When he passes a young woman with an overpowering scent he can’t stop smelling her and stalks her. His lack of control and intensity for scents leads to his demise.

In the beginning of the film when Jean-Baptiste’s mother leaves him to die, the town people scream out “murderer” and she is hung. This is foreshadowing that Jean-Baptiste is going to murder someone and might be hung as well for punishment. Jean-Baptiste’s strength is also shown throughout the film. He survives on the filthy streets when his mother leaves him to die, and he survives when the children try to strangle him when he is an infant. Also when he tries to muffle the young woman’s cries, he ends up suffocating her by accident.

Observation 6

Tyler and I have long been fascinated with the law that affects alcohol sales on Sunday here in the glorious state of South Carolina. This inhibits our college's ability to party on Saturday, which is a major bummer. Clemson will never be a legit party school if this law doesn't change.
These are what we're going to address:
1) how the law should be changed and what can be done to do it
2) how the south is still run by religion and that is against everything that is American
3) how the absence of laws like this can bring the south up to speed with the rest of the country

we're going to interview people from the north and south and find out what they think about the law and how they feel about the differences between the north and the south and what is better.

Observation 9

1. For this project, we will explain the dangers and harm of human traficking. We are going to explain how human trafficking increases the likelihood of prostitution as well as modern human slavery. We will also discuss ways to eliminate human trafficking as well as how the number of occurences of human trafficking are increasing.
2. As for now, we plan to use a video or a campaign for the form of the project.
3. We will be using a video camera, computer, library, video net explorers or video software.

Neizel and Kristen

Observation 9

We have chose to do our project on the rising prices of college tuition
1) we are going to try to explain how and why the prices have rose and they are affecting students and their families involved. We will research statistics of how tuition has rose over time.
2) we want to use a facebook group for our project
3) computer, pictures, cameras, library

Benji, Bethani, and Julia

Observation # 9

1. We are doing our multimedia project on the non-smoking campaign. We will go into detail on why not to smoke and the effects of smoking on people and the community. Through this project we will persuade people not to smoke and those who smoke to quit.
2. We will do a photo journal as the visual for the multimedia project.
3. We will need a camera and a photo application to put together the photo journal.
Alaina & Melanie

Observation 9

1. Through this project I was discuss how fast food restaurants depict their food through images. By displaying them as perfectly put together sandwiches that look full of vegetables (i.e. lettuce, tomatoes) and how they really look. They tend to look greasy barely any lettuce or tomatoes and if their are any they look wilted or unhealthy. The food is depicted to deceive the consumer into thinking that the food is good for you when many times it is not.
2. I plan to display mine through a photo essay. Showing what is depicted and what is reality.
3. I will need a computer, a camera and food from various different fast food restaurants.

Observation 9

1. Through this multimedia project Ben and I are trying to express the problem we and many other students have with the availability of on-campus dining options at night. We will try to persuade people to leave the dining halls and on-campus food courts open until later hours of the night. Our argument will be that kids living on campus have now options to get something to eat late at night. Most students would like something to eat on-campus at late hours or early morning hours. Chili’s next to Harcombe dining hall is open until 10 but that’s not late enough in our opinion. The only way to get something to eat late at night without making somewhat of a long trip is to order pizza delivery and that’s expensive enough in itself. We want to argue that the dining halls and the food courts should stay open a couple hours later. We would also like for there to be a dining hall or food court open until about 2 or 3 AM. This would make a lot of Clemson students happier.
2. The form of our project will be a PowerPoint. We will be interviewing students at Clemson to get their take on the issue and documenting it into the PowerPoint. We may also take some video documentaries and putting them into the PowerPoint but we have not decided on that quite yet. Pictures may also be a possibility to put in the PowerPoint, but most likely just for decoration.
3. We will need a laptop, a video camera and possibly a regular photo camera.

McDonalds Korea

The Korean McDonald's website has a very similar layout to most McDonalds in America. They offer the same types of food and have very similar menus. The website was animated too which could be a promotional ad to grab kids attention. Many of the things on the website are represented in American culture as well, showing how the McDonalds in Korea is so much like the ones in America.

Kristen, Neizel, Steven, Tyler, Sunny Lee

Observation # 9

We chose to analyze Czech Republic's McDonald's website. The Czech Republic's website reflects the architecture that can be found there. The layout is very modern. It has many geometric shapes in the background and the icons used to click on are ovals. The website also has a bar feel to appeal to the adults in Czech Republic. The food is displayed on a wooden bar table and is more hearty. They offer the McCountry and McRoyal burgers which reflect the bar atmosphere.  The food offered in Czech Republic is also very different from the food offered in America.  Czech Republic McDonald's offers different kinds of cheeses such as swiss, american, and cheddar and several kinds of buns. Even making the typical hamburger different. The nutrition information is also different. The Big Mac is 495 calories in the Czech Republic where as in the United States it is 540 calories. Overall, the Czech Republic McDonald's website is different from other countries to reflect the preferences of those of the Czech Republic.
Alaina, Melanie, Bethani, Jordan, Benji, Julia

McDonald's Ireland

We chose the site of McDonalds' in Ireland. You can see many ways American culture is implemented into their site. One way it is shown is that the entire site is in English. They also have their rendition of the dollar menu which is appropriately called the EuroSaver. They do similar prize winning techniques similar to our Monopoly game. Only with theirs instead of revealing board pieces you are revealing codes for a chance to see a free movie at the local theaters. And of course they have the ever famous coupons or gift certificates.

Guideline for Observation 9

Now you've read the requirements and examples for the Multimedia Project. It's time for you to think about what you are going to do in your project. In this observation, please write down your ideas by answering these questions:

1. What do you try to express and present through this project? What will be your argument?
2. What is the form of your project? A video, a photo essay, a blog, a campaign, a Facebook, a PowerPoint?
3. What materials and software you will need?

This could be a group project. You can post this observation as a group. Make sure to note group members' names. It is due next Friday class time. And you will present this in Friday class (April 3rd).

Guideline for Multimedia Project

English 103 Accelerated Composition

Guideline to Multimedia Project

Instructor: Jin Liu (junl@clemson.edu)

 Introduction:

This assignment requires students to develop an extended argument using multimodal composition strategies such as an op-ad, a photo-essay, a website, a Facebook, a MySpace, a video, a podcast, a mp3 file(s), a campaign, or other multimodal combination.  A written report detailing your project’s rationale and process should accompany the final product.  The report should be in MLA format and a minimum of 3000 words. The project will be showcased to the class the day it is due.

Due Dates:

1.     Multimedia assignment (STORYBOARD/OUTLINE) (Due on 4/13)

2.     Multimedia assignment (FINAL DRAFT) (Due on 4/20)

Description:

This project should a visual rhetoric by itself, conveying a clear message through verbal and visual languages. As the function of rhetoric differs—to inform, to convince, to please, to persuade or to entertain, your multimedia composition should serve one or more than one of the purposes. The topic could be about anything, social issues, pop culture, economy, history and politics and so on. You can make a short film, a digital remix, a website, a photo-essay, a song, a blog, a vlog, a Facebook, a MySpace, or a PowerPoint document. Whatever you choose, just make sure that the viewers, including your classmates and instructor, could get your message.

Beside, you will also write a report of at least 3000 words going along with the multimedia composition. The report is supposed to explain what you have done for the project, and which kind of message (s) you want to convey through it. Therefore, the report should include these parts:

1.     A project log:

When who did what, and what you’ve learned so far.

2.     Technology description:

Which software you have used, and what you’ve learned.

3.     Material description:

What images, music and other sources did you use?

Why did you choose to use them?

How did they help convey the message?

4.     Message description:

a.     What do you want to present through the film, the digital remix, the website, the blog, the vlog, the PowerPoint document, the photo-essay, or the song?

b.     Which visual and verbal elements have you used to present the theme?

c.     How do those elements work together to present what you want to present?

Evaluation Criteria:

The purpose of this project is to examine how well you can produce rhetoric works by using multimodal languages. Your multimodal composition should inform, convince, persuade, move or please certain audience of some clear message. During planning and producing process, you should pay close attention to the usage of three rhetorical appeals, the content, the structure, and the design. Your composition will be evaluated how effectively you have used these rhetorical techniques:

* Ethos: the credibility of the author is established through professional language, use of appropriate sources, and evidence of author’s perspective (within or in addition to the main multimodal documents)

* Pathos: the texts make appropriate emotional appeals that both engage the reader and provide insight into the chosen topic

* Logos: the texts present a clear and coherent central idea, supported with appropriate evidence and argumentative strategies

* Content and Structure: the choice of mode and media support the message in the texts and elements of multimedia are thoughtfully integrated into the project rather than as a gratuitous add-on

* Design: the choice of design principles (contrast, repetition, alignment, proximity) as well as rhetorical decisions (transitions, word choice, visual choice, music choice, stance) combine to make an attractive and effective presentation

Observation 7

I wear clothes that are comfortable. In the winter I wear mostly jeans and hoodies. In the summer I wear shorts and t-shirts. Occasionally I will wear a polo or nice shirt but this is mostly becuase my girlfriend likes me to. Although I dress for comfort, there are occasions that I will dreass nicely. At work I dress nicely and if I have a business opportunity I dress nicely. I do this in order to make a good impression on the people that I am dealing with. The way that I dress mostly defines me as a college kid. I am a procrastinator, and therefore usually don't do laundry until I absolutely have to. This sometimes leaves me wearing whatever it is that I have clean. I try not to worry too much about the way I look compared to other people to alleviate myself from the stress of meeting social standards.

3/09/2009

Observation 7

My name is Tyler Blaser. I am a white male. I like to play sports so i wear a lot of athletic clothes for convenience. I also do not consider myself religious so I guess I don't wear a lot of religious stuff or whatever that is. I do not have any piercings or tattoos because I think that they would hurt. I also think I would look stupid if I had one. I do not wear any make up because I think that would be weird. I wear a lot of t-shirts and jeans which I feel comfortable in. I think that I was shaped by my parents to a certain extent because I am like my dad in that I do pretty much the same things that he probably did when he was my age. He wore shorter shorts than I did, which is different.

Tyler Blaser

Observation 7

Most of my appearance identifies with my gender. Most everything about my appearance identifies with femininity. I usually wear comfortable clothes to class and during the day and I tend to dress with more style if there is a special occasion. I usually dress conservatively but I try to dress as most college girls would. An identifying part of my appearance is pearls. Almost everyday, I wear pearl earrings. Both my grandmothers and my mother wear pearl earrings almost everyday so perhaps this is where I picked up this habit. I think pearls are an appropriate expression for me because they are sometimes thought of as a southern jewel and ladylike and I believe that I identify with both of these.
Dear Class,

The first thing people see when they look at me is that I'm a male. Being a male is great, but there are several stereotypes associated with it. For example, men are supposed to be tough, which means you can't be a "sissy" or cry all the time. This is hard for some men because they have to be sensitive with their girlfriends and what not, but around their friends they need to be tough and unfeeling. Being a male I also tend not to care about how I look. I don't want to be like a "pretty boy frat dude" and wear lacoste and all that garbage. Instead I try to dress like it seems like I don't care.
Being a boy affects my behavior as well. All my life my parents encouraged me to play sports and I associated it with manliness. Sports shape your life just as much as any other thing in someone's life in my opinion. Being a boy also means that a lot of people think you're inherently a scumbag. Especially in Clemson, people think that guys are huge creepers that just want to rape chicks. I don't like this stereotype because I feel that most guys, myself included, are pretty reasonable people who are caring and polite. However, heavy lies the crown. Males have an advantage in life, and though it may not be fair, it is nice for me in certain situations. My parents don't really worry about me and let me do my own thing, which is definitely cool. Having girlfriends I've seen how some parents are literally insane about protecting their daughters.

-Steven

OBSERVATION 7

I identify myself with two particular groups- I am Korean American and I am also a female. My parents made it a point to make sure my siblings and I know how to read and write Korean, as well as speak the language fluently. I am very obviously Asian and many people are able to identify me with just my race. I am also a female. I like nice clothes and boys and I fit into many insipid female stereotypes- like I enjoy shopping and dressing up and make up. I would rather be a girl than a boy because most boys aren't selective about their appearance, while girls put more effort into the way they look and present themselves to the public.

Observation 7

I can identify myself with several groups. I identify myself as a college student which also relates to my age group. I also identify myself as a Clemson student. I am in a female group and in a straight female group. I've moved a lot so I'm able to classify myself as being from the south, but also every other area I have lived in which would be Tennessee and Maryland. I'm part of a group as my floor in my dorm, but we also separate into groups and I am part of the more social group. I usually wear makeup which would identify myself with my female group. I also dress mostly feminine. I dress comfortably and represent Clemson through my dress often. The other times I dress I usually fashionable and what would be expected of a girl my age. My hair is long and pretty feminine.

Observation 7- Bethani

The first group that I can identify with is being a girl. I am caucasion and my family farms. I dont really know what class I identify with. I am straight and like boys. I am a Christian. I am a very laid back person, and like to be comfortable in whatever i chose to wear. I like wearing tshirts, preferrably Clemson or Strawberry Hill shirts (my family's farm). I love to wear makeup. Sometimes I wear alot, sometimes not much at all. Most of the time I wear my hair up, but mainly because i just dont feel like fixing it. I have my ears peirced and no tattoos. though, I really want to get a tattoo one day.

Observation 7

There are several groups that I am identified with. First and foremost would be that I am a female. The way I dress has a lot to do with my gender of course. I don't prefer the dressy clothes but I would rather be comfortable in flip flops, jeans, and a t-shirt. I wear makeup which is pretty much typical of the female gender group. I don't wear much makeup though because I like the more natural look. I have my ears pierced, but I don't like to wear very flashy jewelry. I am also associated with the occupation of college student as well as an afterschool counselor at the YMCA. Another category that I am identifed with is that I am a Christian which plays a big role in my life.

Observation 7

I identify myself with various social categories. The most obvious identity that I categorize with is my gender. My identity as a female certainly dictates how I dress. The clothing that I wear identifies myself as someone who appreciates my body as a female. Another identity that I belong with is my race, a Filipino, because my family originated from the Philippines and I was born there. I also identify myself as a student, which mainly dictates how I dress. A student has a busy day, so I usually limit my time when it comes to dressing for class. Therefore, during class, I tend to dress more casual and comfortable, but at the same time portray my femininity. I have both my ears pierced, which also shows my feminine side. Accessories also mark my body as a female, or even a student, especially with my watch when I know I have to be organized. My make up is very light and usually looks like I have nothing on at most times. This somewhat identifies me as a Filipino because my parents advocated little use of make up. My hair also identifies with my race because it contains of my natural hair color.

Observationn 7

I can definitely associate myself with several different groups.  First and foremost, I identify myself with my gender, being a female.  People judge differently based off of gender, whether it is how they dress or act.  With that being said, the clothing that i wear is what i feel comfortable in and like to wear.  I pick out what i want to wear based on what i like, but do keep in mind the latest trends in fashion; so i do also decide on what to buy and wear based sometimes on what's "in" or the "new" style.  I enjoy dressing up, however during the week my outfit usually is comprised of jeans, flip flops, and a t-shirt.  I have my ears pierced, which identifies me with the majority of the female population.  I also wear make-up, which identifies me with the female population. I identify myself with my occupation, since i am a college student.  Lastly, I identify myself with dance.  Many people identify themselves by what they do as a hobby, which in my case is dance.  It has been something I have done since I was young, and has placed me as a part of that group.

Observation #7

There are several social categories that I can identify myself with. First of all I identify myself with my gender, being a female. Society judges individuals based on gender, societal norms dictate how I dress and act in public, and what is considered acceptable. The way I dress reflects this social category. It is acceptable within in society for females to wear skirts in dresses, which I wear. Although I usually dress in more comfortable clothes such as jeans and flip flops. The clothing I wear isn't very expressive and is somewhat dictated by certain fashion trends. I wear simple jewelry which is not very expressive, and I have my ears pierced which identifies me with the female population. I identify myself with my occupation, being a college student, and my race, being caucasian. I affiliate myself with the Democratic Party which reflects my views on certain issues. Many people identify themselves by the sport they are involved in. In high school, I was involved in cheerleading, and I identified myself as a cheerleader.

3/06/2009

Observation 7

I definitely associate myself with many different social categories. The obvious one of course that I affiliate myself with is the female college student. More complex groups I may identify with is that of the multi-racial category. I relate to that group because of my multi-racial backgroud of African-American, Dominican, Irish, and some Native American. I definitely consider myself as a Christian and that part relates to my religious preference. As for markings and piercings on my body I have three piercings in each ear and my belly button is pierced. All the piercings I have I have them because I like the way it looks not for any symbolic reasons or anything. I do where light make up because I think it's a great way to give definition and highlight facial features. I guess I could be considered a preppy dresser. I love fitting t-shirts and female polo shirts.

3/05/2009

Observation 7

I identify myself with several different groups, but which group is more predominant depends on the situation. I identify myself differently at school than I do at home and differently than I do with my friends. I identify a lot with my religion because whether or not I am religious, the culture and tradition of it are part of who I am and how I was raised. My gender is also a huge part of who I am. It hugely impacts how I dress and act in life. I think I also identify with my generation. Generations in general have huge bonds because with time things change and only that age group will understand that period of time because only they experienced it.

I don't think the way I dress is too expressive. I like to be comfortable. I like to be presentable. I like to wear what I think looks good. Other than that I don't dress for anyone but myself. I guess that isn't entirely true, because if I'm being honest, I do have a certain someone in mind when I'm getting dressed. But on most occasions I don't care too much what I wear. I do my makeup based on what's in style and also, again, to be presentable. Nothing over the top, or to stand out too much. I do what I think looks good. I don't wear a lot of jewelry because I think it's annoying. And I got my piercings because I think they look good. Maybe also a little to stand out. With my piercings and black nail polish, I like the whole "relaxed, I don't care what anyone thinks" attitude about it. I try to be a hippie, everything is chill.

Observation 6

I am considering conducting a few different interviews to help support my paper. My main goal is to find out how DTCA affects the public, so I will ask the public how they feel about it. Since much of my paper will focus on DTCA of antidepressants, I will interview both depressed and non depressed people to see if DTCA affects them differently. Also, a big discussion concerning DTCA is how it affects the physician-patient relationship,. so I will interview both physicians and regular consumers to see how differently DTCA affects them. The answers of my interviews will determine whether or not they will be useful in my paper; it all depends how relevant they are to my hypothesis. But if they support my hypothesis, I think it will be a good source because it will serve as very real evidence.

Guideline of Observation 7

Due Monday class time.

Write a paragraph explaining what social categories you are used to identifying yourself with, such as gender, race, class, occupation, political stance, sexual orientation and religious believes and so on. Also analyze how you mark your body with signs of the identities, such as clothing, make up, hair style, piercing, tattoo and other things.

Additionally, bring a piece of those signs to Monday class. For example, a shirt with your favorite band's image on it or some decorations with certain meanings. During Monday class, we will do class presentation on what social categories you belong to and how you make that visual argument by wearing certain signs.

Observation 6 - Steven

I did not think of using an interview as a source for my research paper, however, the more I think about it the more I believe it would be helpful with my process. I have a teacher who is very adept on the topic which I am writing my paper. He was an English major and he wrote his 70 page graduate thesis paper on the topic of transcendentalism, thus I'm sure he will be able to help me out. I have emailed him to see if he will do it, and I expect him to get back to me within the next couple days, at which point I will be able to start the interview process.

Have a good weekend everyone

Steve

Observation 6

I learned so much from the creative writing assignment that I just do not know where to begin. First of all, it caused me to really dig deep and think about my topic in ways that I had never thought about it before, and since we are writing a 12 page paper that is going to be very important. It was also a good assignment because it forced us to use all of the things about rhetoric that we have learned throughout the course of the semester. Lastly, because we were writing about something bad it forced us to really work on our argumentation so that the reader would be able to go along with what we were saying. I just love learning and writing. It's just great.

Observation #6

From writing the creative writing assignment, I have learned how to utilize rhetorical analysis in persuasive arguments. For this assignment, we were assigned to write about something usually viewed as bad and to persuade the audience to view it as something good. I chose to write about Adolf Hitler, a cruel dictator viewed as an awful man world-wide. In my paper I emphasized Hitler's good attributes, such as his speech giving skills, leadership skills, and determination. I also mentioned how much passion Hitler had for Germany, and what he did to improve his country. I didn't really mention the bad things Hitler did. In order to make my argument more persuasive I should have tried somehow to turn his bad actions into a good thing.

Observation 6

Observation 6

From the creative writing assignment I learned how to write using the lighter side of rhetoric. I also learned how to be creative in my writing by changing the traditional outlook on a subject by looking at it in a different light. By looking at something in a different light you can highlight parts of the topic that are not traditionally focused upon to form an argument which may have otherwise seemed ridiculous. Now that different aspects are highlighted they seem plausible.

Tyler Blaser

Observation 6- Bethani

I did my creative paper on the pros and cons of birth control use. I tried to persuade the reader that you can still get pregnant when you are using birth control if you do not use it correctly. I wanted to talk about the benefits of using this form of contraceptive. I think doing this creative paper helped me work on my persuading skills, and not just focus on one stand on the topic. I wanted to talk about both sides and make the reader understand the point of my paper. This will help me with me rhetoric research paper with showing both aspects of the topic of homelessness, but to make sure that I have a solid arguement, not supporting both sides.

Why You Shouldn't Get Someone Else's Name on You as a Tattoo

There are many reasons why you shouldn't get someones named tattooed on your body. One is tattoo ink permanent! Unless this person is family their name should not be inc
luded in your body art. One way you can deal with this mistake however if you've already committed it is you can save up and have it removed by laser; however this method is extremely expensive so you may want to choose and alternative route. One can also choose to take the already permanent name and expand it into another tattoo by making it form into another picture. Also you can turn the persons name into an acronym such as the name Mia can be turned around to represent Miami hopefully this is your hometown.

Collaborative Challenge

Before you prepare to get a tattoo, there are a few things you need to know. Considering where to put the tattoo should be a major factor. For men, the most painful areas to tattoo are the abdomen, spine and chest. For women, the most painful areas to tattoo are the ankle, spine and ribcage. Upon going to the tattoo parlor, many people would not realize these painful areas and would request to get their tattoo in one of these areas. Also, you need to consider the placement of your tattoo for your career's sake. Employers frequently ask if you have visible tattoos and may take it into consideration when hiring you. A tattoo is a reflection of yourself so you should consider careful placement along with a tasteful tattoo as well.

Collaborative Challenge

How-To-Guide

1.) Pick a place that is very sanitary and has a certified artist.
2.) Choose an appropriate design that you will not regret several years down the road.
3.) Pick a location that will satisfy what you want, and somewhere that you can cover up if needed. For example, if it is going to be something personal or something that will need to be hidden from someone, then you need to choose a place that can be covered. However if you want a tattoo that makes a statement, then you will want to choose a very visible location.
4.) Be prepared to accept potential criticism from people who may not agree with your tattoo design.
5.) Make sure you tell your parents if you are underage and get it illegally. It's better for you to tell them before they find out the hard way.

Observation 6

I did not consider using an interview in my research until after the class. Now that I realize the impact that interviews can have on your argument and the audience I think that it will be a good idea to include an interview with my research. Interviews can strengthen arguments because they are actual people and thier ideas. The audience feels that they can relate more with these people than with the author. I think that I will conduct various interviews with people who use Facebook and ask questions about how the advertisement on Facebook effects them. I will ask if they pay attention to the advertisement and how many times a day they may actually click on and look at one of the advertisements.

2/26/2009

Observation 6

At first I was not considering an interview process for my research paper. However, by doing interviews, I will be able to contain primary perspective from the campaign. I will get a more realistic feedback from girls and women about how they feel about there body before and after being exposed with the Dove campaign. Not only will I get feedback based on the campaign, but also gaining more knowledge about how women really feel about their body nowadays considering that our era is known to be a perfectionist one. For my interview process, I will ask women from all ages, young and old, about how they feel about their body. Also I'd like to ask what they think about how the media portrays women nowadays and how they feel about it. There are also other things I'd like to investigate like how they would describe a typical women.

Observation 6

I think that interviewing others on a topic where an audience is trying to be persuaded is beneficial, especially for a research paper like this one given to us.  It gives another perspective, one in which the audience can possibly relate to, and influences and maybe persuades them to believe what is being said in the paper from the people being interviewed.  Although I have decided that I won't be using the interviewing process to include in my paper, I do still think that it helps a research paper when needed.  If I would have used the interviewing process, I most likely would have interviewed teenagers, since my topic is a serious issue usually dealing with people in that particular age group. Asking questions, like if ads and campaigns have influenced them, or if other things have had an impact on what they do would be the types of questions I would have asked.  I think that learning to use this particular process will be something that will help me with later assignments, maybe not in this particular class, but maybe in other courses taken too.

Observation 6

The interviewing process is a very beneficial process when it comes to gaining supporting evidence for a research paper. By interviewing a person it allows for the writer and the audience to gain feedback of a another perspective. This allows for questions to be produced and then answers to be sought. The interviewing process is very helpful for getting the research process started for your paper. I myself will not be using the interviewing process in my paper. That does not mean that I think the process is not helpful. I think the research topic really indicates whether you can use the interviewing process or not. I did not really think or tried the interviewing process prior to us talking about it in class. I am glad I can take it from their to use in other assignments.

Observation 6

My research topic is exploring how President Obama appeals to audiences rhetorically. In this I will try to find adults who actually watched the speeches and formed opinions from them. From asking these questions I will be able to better understand how Obama appeals to different audiences since I'm sure their opinions will differ from different speeches. Even if their opinions had remained the same throughout the speeches I'll try to explore how he kept this image of himself constant in their minds.

Is there a point and time when your opinion changed of the now president after one of his speeches?

Do you think his visual rhetoric or oral rhetoric had more effect?

Which parts of his speech stand out to you if any?

Why do you think Obama is able to inspire and win over the country? Did he win you over? Why and Why not?

2/25/2009

Observation 6

My research topic is the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty. I would like to interview young girls around the age of 10 and 11 about how they think beauty advertisements affect the way they feel about their body images.

In addition to younger girls, I would like to interview teenagers and older women as well to get their feedback from how the media portrays the way women should feel about their bodies.

Another area I am interested in getting feedback from what types of models in advertisements women would like to see in magazines, on commercials, etc.

Observation 6

I'm doing my research paper on the effect smoking in children's movies influence the kids view on smoking. I am going to interview some kids, probably between the ages of 9-13 to get their opinion on the subject. Some of the questions I am going to ask are...

Does seeing a hero smoke in a movie change the way you view smoking?

When you see so many people smoking in movies, does it make you feel like its ok to smoke?

Observation 6

I wrote my Encomium essay on how stealing really isn't that bad. I learned that a good way to be persuasive in a paper is to appeal to the emotional senses of the audience. It also depends on the way you structure the paper. It can depend on the order of which you put things in your paper. The paper it's really nothing but expressing your opinion and being able to put it on paper so it makes sense.

2/17/2009

Observation 5

So far, my research is going fairly well. There seem to be a lot of good academic journal articles on the Campaign and also, Dove's website is helping the research as well. The mapping exercise is helping me to break down the larger subjects of my research question and make them more specific. I am having some trouble finding advertisements for the Campaign but I hope that with more research I will find what I am looking for.

Observation 5

So far I have decided on a topic and began looking through the library database for information. There are plenty of articles out there, now I just have to shape my argument and find support. I will be making a new brainstorm map since this is a different topic than what I had originally chosen. I hope my I will be able to get detailed enough and come up with enough ideas to form an argument. Otherwise, it should all go well.

2/16/2009

observation 5- Steven

Hey class,

thus far my research is going pretty well, so I haven't exactly delved into the issue per say. I guess one could say my iceberg is only visible at the top. The visual mapping process has been helpful, however in developing ideas about my topic. I have come up with new ideas that I would not have thought. I look forward to sharing with you what I come up with and hope that you guys like it.

love,
Steve

Observation #5

So far, I have not been making that much progress in the research process. Since I am unsure that I am sticking with the same topic, I do not want to start thorough research on it yet. In order to research how the breast cancer campaign targets different audiences, I must research the organization's advertisements, and journal articles on how targeting males is different than targeting females in advertisements. The visual mapping exercise I completed a couple weeks ago did not help me in my research process. Trying the exercise again may help me generate ideas for my research paper.

Observation 5

The research for my paper has been progressive so far. I've found several journal articles on my topic some that have happened to be beneficial and some not so helpful. Right now I've been researching some prisons in the local areas to see if I can maybe set up some appointments with Wardens or prisoners with not so violent criminal activity. I am also you using websites from government pages to find statistics on major prisons. The mapping process was very beneficial for me in my paper.

Observation 5- Bethani

At this point in my rhetoric research paper, I haven't done as much research as I should have. Though, I know the things I want to do with this paper and the particular parts of my topic that I want to explore. Today in class, with the help from the teacher, she helped me get the idea to focus on how the media has portrayed the homeless over the past 25-50 years. I know I need to make sure this is a rhetoric assignment and not just a research assignment. I want to show examples through parts of movies, news channels, newspapers, magazines, etc. I want to make sure that I cover all aspects of this issue, especially the specific topic of veterans that are homeless. The viual mapping concept is really helping me organize my thoughts and where I want to go with project. I need to put more time into this project, but I know I will get it done with time.

Observation 5

So far the process in developing my research is going well. It is hard for me to organize the information, Right now I have a on of information on rhetoric in Austin Powers and how it is unique in portraying the English era in a different light than any work before it, but it will be my job to organize it in a way that my audience will be able to see exactly what I am getting to. The mapping exercise has helps somewhat to organize the information that I already have as well as the information that I will need. I will need to be more specific in my research to locate and discuss information about other works that I can compare the movie to in order to show specifically how it was so unique and influential.

Tyler Blaser

Observation 5

The research process for my paper at this moment shows progress and is providing me more information about my chosen topic. As said before, my paper will be based on the website of the campaign. However, with the information that I have gathered from further research, it has given me a better stance about the purpose of the campaign. After reading articles from different women, I was able to gather particular facts that helps accommodate the message that the Dove Company is trying to deliver to its audience. I have a better perspective as if to why their commercial is shown to be provocative and bold. Also, I was able to collect other commercials that use different techniques than the ones that i have been exposed. Mind mapping is helping me organize all these information, especially because there is so much to write about the topic. I will be able to organize my paper with a better structure. It will also be more effective with all the information already classified and categorize to create a better compostion.

Observation 5

The research process is going pretty good so far. I'm having a little bit of a hard time finding information on smoking in children's movies, but I am finding plenty of information on what smoking portrays to its viewers. I will continue to look up more information and try different sources to see what else I can find. I have a general idea of what my paper is going to be about, but the mapping exercise helped me break down my topic into more specific research areas. I was able to break down main topics and make them more detailed to help get my point across. So far, the research is going very well, and I will continue to look for more research on the smoking in children's movies, as well as find examples of some movies.

Observation 5

So far research for my paper has been going fairly smoothly. Luckily archives on important political speeches are readily available sources through the internet. I've started visually mapping to focus on what exactly I am trying to prove in my hypothesis. The mapping helps narrow my topic and focus since there is so much I can work with in my original topic.

Observation 5

My research process for my paper right now is well developed. With the mapping that we have done it has really helped to break down you research topic in order to answer your hypothesis and explain it. The mapping has helped me to think of questions that need to be answered in my paper. Without the mapping process it would have be more complex for me to develop a steady plan for my paper. I have never mapped a paper in that depth before so it was difficult for me at first. It is a very useful technique though when trying to prepare and start a research paper. It allows for all potential points to be made in the paper.

Observation 5

So far, the research process has been going fairly well for me.  Sources off of the internet have been relatively easy to find, and many are credible sources that I can use in my research paper.  I am now organizing the resources I have found so far, and am beginning to plan out the structure of the paper, to see how I may want to format my research.  I plan on going to the library and getting at least one text reference that has much information on my topic.  Also, I am finding advertisements and commercials that would be good to include in the paper to talk about and that are influential on the public audience.  The mapping process has helped me to ask more in depth questions that could potentially be useful to making the paper more persuasive.  This process has also helped me to organize my paper in a more effective way. At first, it was difficult using this technique, since I have not used a process that is so in depth; however, it gradually became easier after beginning to use it and allowed so far for many of the main points to be made.  I think that when I begin to write the actual research paper, it will be less difficult for me because I will have the paper already mapped out with my main points and sources to back it up.

Observation 4- Research topic

For my research topic I will study how President Barack Obama won over America with the rhetoric in his speeches. I want to research his ability to inspire certain audiences, and if his manner and style is enough to win an election. He is being considered on of the greatest orators of his time. I want to analyze how he was inspired by his predecessors such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Abraham Lincoln. I will compare his own speeches throughout his career and notice how his rhetoric appeals change with his various audiences from a race for the senate to the presidency. I will use online databases of his speeches and his predecessors. I will also search for articles about the strategies used by politicians in their speeches. It might be difficult to keep my own personal political views out of the way of researching just the rhetoric.

2/09/2009

Observation 4

My research paper topic that I've decided to discuss is the rise of minority women the media and modern culture. It is to include the challenges they've faced and how they have risen against those odds to become well known figures in our history. I intend to use commercials ads, biographies, autobiographies , magazines and newspaper articles to gather the information for my research paper. Obstacles that I feel I may face include developing a clear but thorough thesis. Not finidng adequate or accurate information may also be an issue at times.

Observation 4-Research Topic

For my research paper I have selected to write about the issue of steroids and illegal drugs in the sport of baseball. This issue has grown dramatically in baseball over the last couple decades. Players take steroids so it gives them an edge on athletes who do not inject these drugs. In most recent years, it has been the hitters who are taking these drugs more than anyone. This is because more and more players in Major League Baseball, the premier baseball league in the country, are looking to hit the ball farther and harder. Mainly, hitters want to hit homeruns. It has become a huge controversy surrounding the MLB and the government has now become involved in the situation. My main focus of the paper will explain why the government has become involved in this situation, and how the use of illegal drugs like steroids has tainted America’s favorite pastime.
For my sources, I intend to use the text book because it has one cartoon about a Major League Baseball player who is obviously on steroids. I also plan to use the internet to retrieve a couple cartoons that are related to steroids in baseball. I also will use a few book sources. After the court hearings of Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Mark McGwire, etc., there have been a few books written on this major problem of illegal drug use in baseball. Finally, I will use the magazine “Sports Illustrated” to refer to a few articles about the use of steroids in baseball.
I think the most difficult part of this paper will be trying to stay on topic. The use of illegal drugs in all athletics has become overwhelmingly high. It may be tough for me to stay away from the issue of steroids in high school sports, or in the Olympics, along with other sporting events. The use of illegal drugs has become so high that Sports broadcasting companies, or sports magazines and newspapers cannot go merely a few weeks without another steroid or illegal drug issue. The amount of illegal drug use in baseball however is very high and I should have enough to write about.

Observation 4

The topic that my research paper will be on is the use of anti-drug and cigarette commercials that are posted on television to prevent teens from experimenting with both these problems. Testing the effectiveness of these commercials and the purpose they are trying to develop will determine how well constructed these organizations are and what potential they may have in eliminating teens from using both these lethal products. Anti-drug and cigarette organizations use media and the support of people in order to eliminate the number of people being affected by both of these products through the use of television commercials, public presentations, and informational text.
When researching about my topic I will use examples of commercials that are seen on cable television in order to present what my paper will be revolved around. I will also like of sources through the website, newspapers, magazines, books, and organizational promoters. The more the information I can gather the better it will be for me on order to make an effective argument.
The most difficult part of my research will be criticizing the commercials for anti-drug and cigarettes because they probably could be improved and altered so that they would have more effect on the audience. Developing ideas for new commercials and ads will allow for a broader audience to be persuaded and will allow people not a part of the rhetorical audience to be affected. Following this outline will work in accordance with the writing of my paper so that it can be written correctly and effectively

Observation 4- Julia

Observation 3
Julia Lawson
For my research paper, I will analyze the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty by studying the advertisements and commercials used by Dove. My goal is to understand what Dove’s message is and by what means do they intend to convey their message. Their campaign is very strong and can be greatly effective to a rhetorical audience and I intend to interpret their commercials from a rhetorical standpoint. The Dove Campaign for Real Beauty has the power to change the way young girls and older women view their own personal beauty and their effectual advertising strategies make this possible.

The most frequent sources that I will use for my research paper will be from watching the Dove commercials and looking at their other advertisements. Also, I will use Dove’s website to read their message to their online audience. I will search in health and beauty magazine archives for articles about Dove’s Campaign.

Dove has numerous commercials promoting their campaign and I believe these will not be hard to find. However, an obstacle that I am afraid I will run into is having no second party interpretation of these commercials other than me. Also, I believe it will be difficult to find scholarly articles on this topic; magazine articles may be slightly more available but still difficult to locate.

Research Paper Topic - Steve

My research paper is going to be about transcendentalism and its role in modern literature. This is a topic which interests me, and I can write a lot about it. I want to talk about how authors have used rhetoric to show their views on establishments in America and how people are constantly becoming dependent on them.

Tentative Thesis: In exploring modern literature the presence of transcendentalism cannot be ignored, as authors have attempted to show their views on the topic throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries through books, such as Into the Wild and The Awakening, and movies, such as the “Shawshenk Redemption”.

I will then give examples; my two main ones will be the “Shawshenk Redemption” (a film) and Into the Wild. I am certain that as I delve into the topic I will be able to find several more examples, but as I said these will be my main two (such as The Awakening).

The most difficult part of this paper will be following the guidelines of it because I am interested in this topic and will want to go off on my own. However, I will have to follow the guidelines, no matter how crippling they may seem.

Observation 4- Bethani

For my rhetoric research project, I want to focus on people that are homelessness worldwide. I want to make other people aware of how these people are living, how they got where they are today. I want to analyze how homeless people can be portrayed to the people around them, what the media classifies them as, how people who do have nice things treat the homeless. I want to explore all aspects of this topic. Mainly, I want to make people aware of how they can help these people, because at some point in everyone's life, they need someone to pick them up off the ground and help them to learn how to live again.
In this research paper, I intend to use the internet to help find real life photographs of people that are truely homeless to get the point across that this is a real problem, even if you dont encounter it everyday. I always want to use some books, maybe written people who have lived homeless or analyze this type of living. I could possibly find magazine articles in specific magazines if I get lucky. I am probably going to use the internet the most.
I think one of the obstacles for me in this project is going to be seeing how bad off these people really are. I have always been the type of person to help people in need so i think this will inspire me to help these people. I think it will be hard to find alot of information on this topic, besides just articles that tell you how to help. That's the only problem.

Observation #4

The fight against breast cancer campaign is my research topic. For my research paper, I will primarily focus on the argument of the campaign, and how the campaign has opportunities for people to get involved and fight for the cure. The breast cancer campaign makes people aware of breast cancer by educating the public through the media, selling merchandise, and hosting fundraising events, such as "Race for the Cure". Through advertisements, they let people know about the severity of the issue and the preventative measures one can take against breast cancer.
There are several sources I plan to use for this research paper. I plan to use campaign commercials broadcasted on television and. advertisements published in newspapers and magazines. I also intend to use press releases and information found on the national breast cancer website and the Susan G. Komen website. I might also use articles on breast cancer found in online databases or journals that correlate to the fight against breast cancer campaign.
There are several obstacles that I may encounter while researching the fight against breast cancer campaign. I may not be able to find the commercials broadcasted on television on the internet in order to site the source. I also might be difficult to find examples of advertisements magazines and newspapers in an online form to incorporate into my research paper. It may be difficult to choose from the plethora of advertisements about the fight against breast cancer to incorporate into my paper.

Observation 4

I am very interested in psychology, so for my topic I would like to focus on depression. More specifically, I would like to find information about how depression is portrayed in the media, as well as how anti-depressants are marketed to try to change the stigma about depression. I will focus on how the public views depression, how it is portrayed on television and in movies, and how it is discussed by figures of power, such as celebrities, news anchors, political figures, etc. Then, I will reflect on rhetorical strategies used to market anti-depressants in order to reverse how people view and feel about depression. I will also look at the history of depression in the media as well as the history of feelings about anti depressants and anti-depressant advertisements, and how these have changed over time.
As far as my sources are concerned I am hoping to use a wide variety of sources in order to have the best overall support for my thesis. I will use many psychological journal articles, magazine articles, film examples (media examples), advertisements themselves, and books to collect my ideas and support my argument.
I am hoping that I will be able to find enough information to come up with a reasonable argument and a decent paper. I am afraid that I will get stuck with not enough information to go off of. I am also concerned that I will not be able to develop a valid argument. However, I am very interested in this topic so I will certainly try very hard to make this work.
