Observation 4-Research Topic

For my research paper I have selected to write about the issue of steroids and illegal drugs in the sport of baseball. This issue has grown dramatically in baseball over the last couple decades. Players take steroids so it gives them an edge on athletes who do not inject these drugs. In most recent years, it has been the hitters who are taking these drugs more than anyone. This is because more and more players in Major League Baseball, the premier baseball league in the country, are looking to hit the ball farther and harder. Mainly, hitters want to hit homeruns. It has become a huge controversy surrounding the MLB and the government has now become involved in the situation. My main focus of the paper will explain why the government has become involved in this situation, and how the use of illegal drugs like steroids has tainted America’s favorite pastime.
For my sources, I intend to use the text book because it has one cartoon about a Major League Baseball player who is obviously on steroids. I also plan to use the internet to retrieve a couple cartoons that are related to steroids in baseball. I also will use a few book sources. After the court hearings of Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Mark McGwire, etc., there have been a few books written on this major problem of illegal drug use in baseball. Finally, I will use the magazine “Sports Illustrated” to refer to a few articles about the use of steroids in baseball.
I think the most difficult part of this paper will be trying to stay on topic. The use of illegal drugs in all athletics has become overwhelmingly high. It may be tough for me to stay away from the issue of steroids in high school sports, or in the Olympics, along with other sporting events. The use of illegal drugs has become so high that Sports broadcasting companies, or sports magazines and newspapers cannot go merely a few weeks without another steroid or illegal drug issue. The amount of illegal drug use in baseball however is very high and I should have enough to write about.

  1. Your topic is clear but I think you need to specify your thesis. It is unclear exactly what you will be discussing in your paper and how it pertains to rhetoric. I wasn't sure what exactly you were going to focus on until I read about your sources. Your topic is interesting, it just needs to be more specific.
Also, I think as a solution to your obstacles you should make sure that your research is very specific, especially when you are initially searching so that you can stay on topic.
